Tracing Narratives

Tracing Narratives
October 2nd - October 27th
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 3rd 6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present our October exhibition, Tracing Narratives featuring the artwork of Kyle Browne, Jenna Powell and Nina Samoiloff..

Tracing Narratives, curated by Jenna Powell, reinterprets the vernacular of a coastal region often characterized by quaint, historical imagery. Material and process provide the framework for the artist’s investigations, which also utilize found objects and historic natural and industrial sites. Their work reveals a timeline of narratives that meet at an intersection of archiving, geography and history.

The artistic practices of Browne, Powell and Samoiloff include perfomative mapping that informs and connects their bodies with the matter they are working with. Browne and Samoiloff seek, sort and collect tidal detritus recalling the rhythmic toil of digging, gathering, and sorting shellfish. Powell works with historic sites and disappearing tools of industries and, like Browne and Samoiloff, restores the energy to abandoned rituals and sites by enacting the stages of invention and production.

Tracing Narratives was originally proposed to the New Art Center's Curatorial Opportunity Program (COP), which enables first-time or established curators to explore experimental approaches in the presentation of contemporary art. The COP investigates contemporary culture through the visual arts and makes possible diverse curatorial visions through an open call process. Text in this press release was pulled directly from the original proposal.

September Exhibition: Bound for Extinction
Emily Parode & Conny Goelz-Schmitt
September 4th - September 29th
Reception: September 5th 6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present it's September exhibition, Bound for Extinction, featuring the work of Beverly based artists Emily Pardoe and Conny Goelz-Schmitt.

Emily Pardoe creates collages, fabric pieces and video that explore the relationships between human beings, and her own relationship to others. Employing words and narratives Pardoe uses her artwork to find and express her most honest and vulnerable emotions. Her work is at times funny, sad, angry or passive – but always relatable.

Conny Goelz- Schmitt creates paper collages and found object sculptures (out of old books) that explore the relationship between the past and present. While playing close attention to the formalities and aesthetic of a piece, Goelz-Schmitt looks to create something contemporary and relevant out of yesterday’s discarded materials.

Both artists celebrate the evidence of the artist’s hand and do not seek to remove themselves from the process of creation, or hide from the viewer. Pardoe exposes her own history, while Goelz-Schmitt exposes the history of her materials.

August Exhibition: The Space Between

The Space Between
July 31st - September 1st
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 1st 6:00pm - 8:00pm
95 Rantoul Street Beverly MA 01915

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present our August exhibition The Space Between, featuring the paintings of Sandy Belock-Phippen and Jill Pabich.

Beverly based artists Sandy Belock-Phippen and Jill Pabich create paintings that are compelling and iconic in their imagery and technique. The works shown here share a sense of immediacy and spontaneity and a highly individualized sense of color and spatial relationships.

Belock-Phippen’s current work focuses on the constantly changing, nuanced   landscapes of New England and beyond, which serve as springboards to explorations of the ephemeral: light, color and the emotive quality of place.  A fluent, tactile handling of the medium is striking in all the pieces.

This passionate commitment to the medium is a strong visual link to Jill Pabich’s work. Her photorealistic renderings of people and places, combined with surrealist compositions, create dynamic tension between the painting and the viewer.

Gallery Hours:

May Exhibition

Helms of the Homunculus
May 1st - June 2nd
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 2nd 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Nick Criscuolo and Brian Galderisi

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present it’s May exhibition, Helms of the Homunculus featuring the works of Beverly based painter/animator Nick Criscuolo and New York based painter/photographer Brian Galderisi. Both are graduates of Montserrat College of Art.

Criscuolo and Galderisi both explore the figure and portraiture in their work, distorting and disrupting it to different ends and through different means. Criscuolo obliterates any likeness to the human form through his process and materials; Galderisi preserves the human form but re-contexualizes it by placing it in surreal, film-noiresque environments.

Criscuolo is fascinated by our tendency to pick a face out of randomness whether one really exists or not, his paintings force your eye to question what it sees. Galderisi’s figures are so central to his work, it’s not a question of whether they do or do not exist, but a question of where and why.

Join us for an artist reception as part of Beverly’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, May 2nd from 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the Gallery at Porter Mill. Free and open to the public. Contact director Bea Modisett at studios.portermill@gmail.com with any questions.

April Exhibition: Field of Dreams

Field of Dreams
Maria Malatesta & Christine O'Brien
April 3rd - April 28th
Opening Reception: Thursday April 4th, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present it’s April exhibition Field of Dreams, featuring the paintings of Boston based artist Maria Malatesta and Beverly based artist Christine O’Brien.  Both Malatesta and O’Brien create  paintings that boast bold use of color and texture and warmly display the subtleties of nature. While the artists employ methods that evoke the natural world, they also utilize fuzzy detail and dissolved shapes to whisk away any tangible or fully recognizable form. This ambiguity allows the viewer to bring their own associations and memories to the works.

Maria Malatesta makes her studio in the South End of Boston. She holds strong ties to the Beverly arts community as a popular professor of a mixed media class at Montserrat College of Art. She also teaches privately in her studio. Christine O’Brien runs her studio out of Beverly’s own Porter Mill. She recently had a solo-exhibition in the South End at Galatea Fine Art.

Please join us in the gallery for the opening of this exhibition and a toast to the artist on Thursday, April 4th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm as part of Beverly’s First Thursday Art Walk.  The exhibition will run through April 28th. Gallery hours are Wednestday, Thursday and Friday 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 12:00pm – 4:00pm and by appointment.
